Successful Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant at Paras Hospital, Panchkula Saves Bank Official’s Life

Chandigarh : A State Bank of India official from Ambala, who suffered from acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a severe and potentially fatal type of blood cancer, got a new lease of life after doctors at Paras Health, Panchkula, successfully treated him using his sister’s stem cells. 45-year-old Mr. Suresh (name changed), an SBI official from Ambala has recovered fully now, following a critical allogeneic bone marrow transplant (AlloBMT). The life-saving procedure marks a significant milestone in the hospital's hematology and oncology services.
A press conference on the case was organized at the multispecialty hospital where media persons were apprised of the challenges and innovative treatment techniques that were used to save the life of this patient.
Mr. Suresh (name changed) began experiencing progressive weakness in September 2023. Initially diagnosed with anemia at a local hospital, he sought further consultation at Paras Hospital Panchkula's Hematology Department. After a comprehensive evaluation, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
"Acute myeloid leukemia is a rapidly progressing cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. Given the aggressive nature of the disease and the genetic risk factors present in this case, an allogeneic bone marrow transplant was deemed necessary to increase the patient’s chances of survival. We are fortunate to have found a fully HLA-matched donor in his sister, which significantly improved the prospects of a successful transplant. This match was critical as it significantly reduced the risk of transplant rejection and other complications," said Dr.(Brig.) Ajay Sharma, Director & HOD Haemato- Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant, Paras Health, Panchkula.
Dr. Pankaj Mittal, Facility Director, said “Paras Health Panchkula has a comprehensive and advanced cancer setup, which includes a range of diagnostic, therapeutic, and supportive care services designed to provide holistic cancer care. The facility typically offers state-of-the-art technology and a multidisciplinary team approach to treat various types of cancer, all under one roof. We are the only private hospital in the tri-city area offering bone marrow transplants sets us apart and highlights the advanced capabilities of our facility.”
Dr. Puneet Sachdeva, Consultant, Transfusion Medicine and Blood Centre said, “Nowadays, blood centers are not only limited to collection, processing and issue of blood but these have been upgraded to Departments of Transfusion Medicine. Our Department of Transfusion Medicine at Paras Health Panchkula is performing a variety of therapeutic apheresis procedures like collection of peripheral blood stem cells, therapeutic plasma exchange, different types of cytapheretic procedures etc. Our blood center is fully equipped to provide transfusion support to patients of different specialties. We have all types of blood components available at our blood center.”
The transplant procedure took place on May 31, 2024, under the expert care of Paras Hospital Panchkula's multidisciplinary team headed by Dr. (Brig.) Ajay Sharma. The patient underwent a complex procedure, which involved replacing his diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells from his sister.
Mr. Suresh (name changed) is fully recovered now, with his sister's stem cells functioning in his blood and other body systems. His successful recovery is a testament to the advanced medical facilities and dedicated care provided by the team at Paras Hospital Panchkula.
