Mohali, September 29: As many as 100 people including doctors and para-medical staff of Shalby Hospital, Mohali and members of Lions Club, Mohali and Senior Citizens Association, Mohali participated in a ‘walkathon’ to mark World Heart Day on Thursday.
The walkathon which moved through phase 9 and then to stadium road was organized by Shalby Hospital in association with Lions Club Mohali and Senior Citizens Association, Mohali to promote awareness on healthy heart and lifestyle.
Earlier a health talk on healthy heart awareness was also organized in Shalby Hospital where Dr. Sankalp Sharma, senior consultant cardiologist Shalby Hospital, Mohali talked about tips to keep heart healthy and fit.
He said that 80 percent of heart diseases can be stopped from becoming fatal if detected early and managed properly.
“Right from the day you are born, your heart starts working nonstop. What you eat, feel and do everything affects your heart. Understanding and implementing the importance of the right diet and exercise from childhood is very essential. Habits are not built in a day. They need to be inculcated right from the very beginning,”
Dr. Sankalp said that stress management be it school study stress, peer pressure, job stress or family stress needs to properly addressed and tackled. In India it is a common tendency to give as little as possible value to mental health especially when it comes to women. We should all make it a habit to talk to our kids, our family members to identify stressful triggers.
Behavioral habits like smoking and alcohol intake also contribute to a bad heart and spreading awareness on how much is enough is very important. Willingness to talk about it, accepting it and seeking treatment for the same will save many lives.
Drug abuse also leads to sudden cardiac deaths in young adults, again emphasizing the importance of talking to your kids and identifying trouble areas and seeking proper treatment for the same.
Among others Jaswinder Singh, Jagjit Singh, Ram Dass Wahi and Ankit Tanaja the chairman, president, secretary and treasurer of Lions Club respectively were also presented during the occasion.
